The roofs of Minnan-style buildings are often double-sloped or single-sloped, typically featuring upturned eaves known as "swallowtail ridges." This design not only has an aesthetic appeal but also aids in drainage and wind resistance.

The structural design of Minnan architecture emphasizes windproofing, moisture resistance, and earthquake resistance. Given that the Fujian region frequently experiences typhoons and earthquakes, buildings typically have strong foundations and flexible structures to withstand natural disasters.

Our balcony features such "swallowtail ridges," a characteristic preserved since the Guangxu period. Although various architectural styles were popular in different eras, our old house, established 250 years ago, retains these Minnan-style architectural features that originated during the Taisho period.
